The Diamonds ~ Today
The Diamonds were released from their Mercury contract shortly after this. David Somerville
embarked upon a solo career, sometimes singing under the name "David Troy" and later in the
sixties joined up with another harmony group, "The Four Preps". He sang lead on "Love of the
Common People". Since then he has been active in a variety of spheres, including songwriting,
acting, and performing - he is still very busy today. Dave was replaced by Jim Malone, who
sang lead until 1966, after which he and Evan Fisher left the group and formed a duo.
John Felten left the original group in 1968. Around 1978, Felten started his own "splinter"
group of Diamonds.
Tragically, he was killed in a light aircraft accident during transit from a Diamonds
concert in May 1982. John and his wife Linda were returning to their home in Grant's Pass,
Oregon, when the light plane in which they were passengers, crashed on Mt. Shasta in California.
The other
group members have joined forces intermittently for revival shows, and have toured extensively.
Mike Douglas is still very active in the music business. He currently has another website on the
internet. littledarlinsmusicworks.com
With the 50's drawing to a close, the face of american music was once again changing.
Gone were the Rock n' Roll shows, the bus tours with Dick Clark & Allen Freed. 30 different
acts in all, including, Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, Fats Domino, Frankie Lymon, The Drifters,
The Shirelles, The Coasters and many others, boarding two greyhound buses and touring America
& Canada. Those days were quickly becoming fond memories of the past for the Diamonds.
